Safelite® Glass Corp. Wins 2013 Manufacturing Leadership 100 Award in Sustainability Category
ENFIELD, N.C. – March 15, 2013 - The nation's largest exclusively domestic producer of windshields for the vehicle glass replacement market, Safelite® Glass Corp., was honored for its sustainability efforts with a 2013 Manufacturing Leadership 100 (ML100) Award, sponsored by Frost & Sullivan's Manufacturing Leadership Council.
According to Frost & Sullivan's Manufacturing Leadership Council, ML100 Award recipients have distinguished themselves by embracing breakthrough innovation and enabling their companies to anticipate and respond to customers with unmatched agility.
Safelite® Glass Corp.’s environmental-friendly efforts include recycling more than 5,000 tons of glass out of the manufacturing plant alone each year and a unique national windshield recycling program with parent company Safelite® Group, which expects to result in saving an additional 15,000 to 20,000 tons of material going to landfills every year.
Other efforts include smarter packaging. Safelite® moves vehicle glass packaged on pallets and separated by pads. Efforts to improve both have been made. Once wood pallets can no longer be re-used, they are broken down and chipped for mulch rather than going to a land full. The nails in the pallets are captured during the chipping process and sold as a low-end recycled metal. In 2012, Safelite® began transitioning to re-usable steel pallets as an alternative. Also, in an effort to eliminate environmental issues associated with Styrofoam cling strips and separator pads, Safelite® recently changed to cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) separator pads, which can complete 130 trips as compared to Styrofoam’s one trip.
“Safelite® recognizes that our activities inevitably have an impact upon the environment, both locally and globally. We believe that reducing our environmental footprint is not only vital to the continued success and quality of our business and the service we provide, but that we also have a social responsibility to care for and protect the environment for our generations and those of the future,” said Dino Lanno, Safelite’s senior vice president of supply chain and manufacturing.
